Letter to the Community

March 1, 2012

The Weston Police Department hosted their annual report to the community on February 22. Information was presented on crime trends, budgeting, strategic planning and our data-driven policing model. The WPD will work on formatting the
information and mail out a summary to the public in the next few weeks.

Dog Ordinance

The dog ordinance allows the WPD to waive certain fees to encourage voluntary compliance with the cities dog ordinance. During the month of March the WPD will be suspending the dog registration fees. If you are a dog owner complete the city dog license application and provide proof of current rabies and your dog license and tag will be issued at no cost for the calendar year.

Recently the number of dog complaints has been increasing. As a reminder to dog owners you are responsible for the actions of your animal. The ordinance does prohibit dogs running at large and other nuisance behaviors. A full copy of the dog ordinance can be downloaded from our website at www.westonpd.com/dog-ordinance.

Community Education

The WPD hosted a Women’s Safety Strategies class this month. The class talked about myths v. reality of sexual assaults and types of sex offenders. The last half of the class focused on safety strategies and crime prevention.
The feedback was very positive and several requests have already been received for a second class.

Abandoned or Disabled Vehicles

There are many abandoned vehicles in our city. Both state law and city ordinance prohibit abandoning or storing vehicles on public roadways. In some cases private storage of multiple vehicles is prohibited as well. If you
have a vehicle that is abandoned or not functional and would like to have it removed from your property contact the WPD and we may be able to coordinate a no cost option to have that vehicle removed.

Website

The WPD is continuing to build the police department’s website.  We have recently added a “blotter” page which provides a basic summary of some incidents your officers handle.   As questions, new ideas or detailed information is made available we are adding to the website. Our goal is to
have an online resource that acts as a single source for public safety information within the city.

We continue to post on Facebook. The quickest way to find our Facebook page is go to www.westonpd.com and click on the Facebook icon.  It will take you to our FB page.
While you’re there show your support for our efforts to increase public awareness and transparencies in local government and click “like”.

It is an honor to serve you.
